CHAPTER FIFTEEN
* * *
September
Evan had moved out of his apartment a couple weeks before Labor Day weekend. We’d gone house hunting together, and I’d helped him select a huge house in a more established area of Los Angeles. Located near mountains, the property had a long, winding driveway that hid the house from public view and afforded him privacy.
“Move in with me,” he’d said, after taking me to the new house.
I smiled affectionately at him before replying, “I can’t.”
Evan sighed loudly. “I like having you here.”
“You still can.” Evan looked at me for clarification. “Sleepovers. Giving me a few drawers and closet space is fine. Besides, you haven’t met my parents yet. I’d prefer they didn’t learn about our relationship from a tabloid.”
Evan sighed again. The real reason was that I wanted to be married before having such a commitment.
So, tonight my parents were finally going to meet Evan. We were joining them for a mock 4th of July barbecue at their house. We’d been in Canada during the holiday, where Evan had to gently remind me that, being British, he’d never celebrated the 4th. I had to laugh at my stupidity. Now, I thought it would be fun to treat him to a taste of true Americana.
Around 10 a.m., Evan came over to my apartment. I had coffee waiting for him, and he took his cup and headed straight for my bedroom. From the hallway, I could hear his laughter and knew he’d seen my joke.
“You like,” I asked as I entered my bedroom, dying to see his face. He looked amused.
“This is the most ridiculous thing ever,” he exclaimed. “But only in your case do I understand it.”
A huge poster of Evan as the character of Nicholas from The Calling was taped over my bed. Andria had gotten it for me. Eventually, I’d frame it.
“But tell me what you really think,” I said in a teasing tone.
“Really? All right, then. That’s so silly. Please tell me you aren’t planning to leave it up.”
“Of course I am. It’ll keep me company at night when you’re not here.”
“Well, so long as it’s a poster of me.”
“Uh-huh. Hey, don’t forget to autograph it for me. It might be worth something someday.”
I grabbed a marker from my desk and handed it to him. He took it and leaned across my bed to sign the poster. I crawled onto the bed and fell across my pillows. As he signed the poster, I gazed up at him.
“Is it awkward having me lie under you like this?”
Evan glanced downward at me and saw my goofy grin. “Knowing you, you’re trying to look up my trousers. Sex maniac.”
I giggled before asking, “What are you writing?”
“‘I love you, Rafaella,’ along with my signature.”
“Now that’s just got to be worth something.”
“Indeed. But sorry, you can’t sell it.” He got off the bed and moved to my dresser. “Stay there. I’m about to snoop.”
Evan looked over my faceless sculpture collection of Willow Tree figurines by the artist Susan Lordi.
